Employment in June was down 0.1% from May. The unemployment rate was 7.1%, up from 7.0% in May. Construction employment was up 2.4% from May while manufacturing employment was down 0.6% from a month earlier.
In June, employment stood at 17.8 million, up 0.4% from June 2013. Full-time employment grew by 33,500 from May, while part-time employment decreased by 43,000 from the previous month. Full-time employment was up by 35,600 from June 2013, while part-time increased by 36,600 over the same period.
Employment over the past year grew in six provinces. Alberta (+3.7%), New Brunswick (+1.8%) and Saskatchewan (+1.3%) led the way. The employment growth rate in Quebec was -0.3% and in Ontario was +0.1%. Employment from a year earlier was down most in Newfoundland and Labrador (-5.3%) followed by Nova Scotia (-2.2%) and Manitoba (-0.8%).
Total employment gains of 10,300 have occurred in Ontario since June 2013. Its unemployment rate was 7.5% in June, up from 7.3% in May. Quebec’s total employment decrease since June 2013 was 13,900. Its unemployment rate in June was 8.1%, up from 8.0% in May.
Since June 2013, employment in the goods-producing sector has decreased by 1.1% and in the services-producing sector it has grown by 0.8 %.
The construction industry gained 31,800 jobs in June over May bringing total construction employment to 1,337,100, which is a decrease of 8,9000 construction jobs (-0.7%) from May 2013.
Total manufacturing employment was down 10,600 from May to 1,710,900 jobs. That was a loss of 16,100 positions (-0.9%) since June 2013.
The number of people working in retail and wholesale trade was up 3,000 in June from May and totaled 2,726,100. That was a gain of 0.8% from June 2013.
Employment among adult women, aged 25 and over, was up 34,700 in June 2014 over June 2013 and increased by 4,600 from May. Employment among adult men was up 87,700 in June 2014 over June 2013 and gained by 29,500 from May. Employment among youths (15-24 years of age) was down by 50,200 since June 2013, and fell by 43,600 from May.
In June, private sector employment was down 21,000 from May, and increased 1.0% from June 2013. Self-employment was up 23,400 in June over May, and decreased by 0.8% from June 2013. Public sector employment was down 0.2% in June from May but increased 1.0% from June 2013. Total private sector employment in June was 11,478,000; self-employment was 2,704,800; and public sector employment was 3,637,800.
