Employment in November decreased by 35,700 from October. The unemployment rate was 7.1%, up from 7.0% in October. Construction employment was up 1.1% from October and manufacturing employment was up 1.0% from a month earlier.
In November, employment stood at 18.0 million, up 0.7% from November 2014. Full-time employment grew by 36,600 from October, while part-time employment decreased by 72,300 from the previous month. Full time employment was up by 192,400 from November 2014, while part-time employment fell by 68,400 over the same period.
Employment over the past year grew in six provinces. British Columbia, with a 2.6% annualized growth rate, led the way followed by Saskatchewan (+1.0%) and Quebec (+0.7%). The employment growth rate in Ontario was 0.5%. Employment from a year earlier was down most in Newfoundland and Labrador (-1.9%) followed by Prince Edward Island (-1.1%) and Nova Scotia, (-0.5%).
Total employment gains of 34,100 have occurred on Ontario since November 2014. Its unemployment rate in November was 6.9%, up from 6.8% in October. Quebec’s total employment increase since November 2014 was 29,900. Its unemployment rate in November was 7.5%, down from 7.7% in October.
Since November 2014, employment in the goods-producing sector was down by 0.3% and in the services-producing sector grew by 1.0%.
The construction industry gained 15,300 jobs in November over October, bringing total construction employment to 1,372,300 which is a decrease of 8,600 from November 2014. Total manufacturing employment was up 17,400 from October to 1,729,700 jobs. This was an increase of 24,000 positions from November 2014.
The number of people working in retail and wholesale trade was down 15,600 in November from October and totaled 2,732,400, up 0.4% from November 2014.
Employment among adult women, aged 25 and over, was up 70,400 in November 2015 over November 2014 and increased by 2,600 from October. Their unemployment rate was 5.7%. Employment among adult men was up 99,700 in November 2015 over November 2014 but fell by 14,600 from October. Their unemployment rate was 6.5%. Employment among youths (15-24 years of age) was down 46,000 since November 2014 and decreased by 23,600 from October. Their unemployment rate was 12.7%.
In November, private sector employment was up 35,600 from October but decreased by 40,800 from November 2014. Self-employment grew by 26,300 in November over October and increased by 33,400 from November 2014. Public sector employment was down 21,200 from October but grew by 55,100 from November 2014. Total private sector employment in November was 11,599,800; self-employment was 2,776,400
