Municipalities issued $6.5 billion worth of building permits in July, up 0.8% from June but 10.0% lower than in July 2015. Three provinces reported an increase in permits over a year ago. Manitoba experienced the largest gain, (+25.5%) followed by Ontario (+3.9%). The steepest annualized losses occurred in Saskatchewan (-44.5%), Alberta (-31.7%) and Newfoundland and Labrador (-29.2%). Wholesalers sold $56.4 billion worth of goods and services in June, up 0.7% from May and 3.2% higher than in June 2015. Excluding the automotive sector, wholesale sales were up 1.9% from June 2015. In terms of volume, wholesale sales were up 0.6% in June from May. Annualized wholesale sales were up in six provinces. British Columbia (+9.6%) led the way, followed by Ontario (+5.9%). The Consumer Price Index rose by 1.3% in July compared with July 2015, down from the annualized increase of 1.5% in June. The CPI in July for goods was up 0.3% from a year earlier while the CPI for services rose 2.1%. Gasoline prices in July were down 14.0% from July 2015, after dropping 8.5% in June. Overall, energy prices declined 7.4% between July 2015 and July 2016, following a 4.4% annualized rate of decrease in June. Retail sales in June were $44.1 billion, down 0.1% from May but an increase of 2.7% from June 2015. Excluding sales by motor vehicle and parts dealers and by gasoline stations, retail sales were up by 3.0% from June 2015. Retail sales in volume terms were down 0.3% from May.
