Retail sales in July were $42.5 billion, a decrease of 0.1% from June but up 5.0% from July 2013. Excluding sales by motor vehicle and parts dealers and by gasoline stations, retail sales were up by 4.0% from July 2013. Retail sales in volume terms were flat from June. The Consumer Price Index rose by 2.1% in August compared with August 2013, the same rate of annualized increase as in July. The CPI in August for goods was up 1.7% from a year earlier while the CPI for services rose 2.4%. Gasoline prices decreased 2.1% from August 2013, after rising 2.1% in July. Overall, energy prices grew 3.3% between August 2013 and August 2014, following a 4.7% annualized rate of increase in July. Wholesalers sold $52.9 billion worth of goods and services in July, down 0.3% from June but 6.1% higher than in July 2013. Excluding the automotive sector, wholesale sales were up 4.9% from July 2013. In terms of volume, wholesale sales were down 0.6% in July from June. Annualized wholesale sales grew in nine provinces. Prince Edward Island (+16.5%) led the way, followed by Manitoba (+10.0%) and British Columbia (+8.5%). Employment in August was down 0.1% from July. The unemployment rate was 7.0%, unchanged from July. Construction employment was up 1.9% from July while manufacturing employment fell 0.6% from a month earlier. In August, employment stood at 17.9 million, up 0.5% from August 2013. Full-time employment fell by 2,300 from July, while part-time employment decreased by 8,700 from the previous month.
