The Consumer Price Index rose by 2.1% in July compared with July 2013, following a 2.4% increase in June. The CPI in July for both goods and services was up 2.1% from a year earlier. Gasoline prices increased 2.1% from July 2013, after rising 5.4% in June. Overall, energy prices grew 4.7% between July 2013 and July 2014, following a 6.7% annualized rate of increase in June. Wholesalers sold $53.0 billion worth of goods and services in June, up 0.6% from May and 8.7% higher than in June 2013. Excluding the automotive sector, wholesale sales were up 8.5% from June 2013. In terms of volume, wholesale sales were up 0.7% in June from May. Annualized wholesale sales grew in all provinces. Prince Edward Island (+16.1%) led the way, followed by Newfoundland and Labrador (+14.5%) and British Columbia (+12.0%). Employment in July was up 0.2% from June. The unemployment rate was 7.0%, down from 7.1% in June. Construction employment was down 2.9% from June while manufacturing employment was up 0.7% from a month earlier. In July, employment stood at 17.9 million, up 0.9% from July 2013. Municipalities issued $8.0 billion worth of building permits in June, up 13.5% from May and 20.1% higher than in June 2013. Five provinces reported an increase in permits over a year ago. The largest increase was recorded in Quebec (+104.4%) followed by Newfoundland and Labrador and by Alberta, both at +25.5%. Double-digit annualized decreases over June 2013 occurred in three provinces.
