Wholesalers sold $52.6 billion worth of goods and services in May, up 2.2% from April and 5.4% higher than in May 2013. Excluding the automotive sector, wholesale sales were up 4.5% from May 2013. In terms of volume, wholesale sales were up 2.2% in May from April. Annualized wholesale sales grew in nine provinces. British Columbia (+11.2%) led the way, followed by Manitoba (+7.2%) and Nova Scotia (+6.8%). The only decrease occurred in Newfoundland and Labrador (-0.9%). The Consumer Price Index rose by 2.4% in June compared with June 2013, following a 2.3% increase in May. The CPI for goods increased by 2.6% in the 12 months to June while the CPI for services was up 2.1% over the same period. Gasoline prices increased 5.4% from June 2013, after rising 6.2% in May. Overall, energy prices grew 6.7% between June 2013 and June 2014, following an 8.4% annualized rate of increase in May. Excluding energy, the Consumer Price Index rose 1.9% in June, after growing by 1.7% in May. Food prices rose 2.9% in the 12 months to June, up from the increase of 2.3%...

Employment in June was down 0.1% from May. The unemployment rate was 7.1%, up from 7.0% in May. Construction employment was up 2.4% from May while manufacturing employment was down 0.6% from a month earlier. In June, employment stood at 17.8 million, up 0.4% from June 2013. Full-time employment grew by 33,500 from May, while part-time employment decreased by 43,000 from the previous month. Municipalities issued $6.9 billion worth of building permits in May, up 13.8% from April but 6.4% lower than in May 2013. Four provinces reported an increase in permits over a year ago. The largest increase was recorded in Manitoba (+45.1%) followed by British Columbia (+7.7%) and New Brunswick (+7.5%). Double-digit annualized decreases over May 2013 occurred in three provinces.
