Retail sales in April were $41.6 billion, an increase of 1.1% from March and up 5.1% from April 2013. Excluding sales by motor vehicle and parts dealers and by gasoline stations, retail sales were up by 4.8% from April 2013. Retail sales in volume terms grew by 0.8% from March. Increases in month-over-month sales were reported in 10 of 11 sectors representing 98% of retail trade. March 2014 sales over March 2013 were up in all provinces, except Prince Edward Island (-2.7%). The Consumer Price Index rose by 2.3% in May compared with May 2013, following a 2.0% increase in April. The CPI for goods increased by 2.5% in the 12 months to May while the CPI for services was up 2.1% over the same period. Gasoline prices increased 6.3% from May 2013, after rising 6.6% in April. Overall, energy prices grew 8.4% between May 2013 and May 2014, the same annualized rate of increase as experienced in April. Municipalities issued $6.0 billion worth of building permits in April, up 1.1% from March but 13.4% lower than in April 2013. Three provinces reported an increase in permits over a year ago. The largest increase was recorded in Nova Scotia (+41.6%) followed by Manitoba (+8.7%) and Saskatchewan (+1.9%). Double-digit annualized decreases over April 2013 occurred in six provinces. Employment in May was up 0.1% from April. The unemployment rate was 7.0%, up from 6.9% in April. Construction employment was up 0.3% from April whikoe manufacturing employment was down 0.7% from a month earlier. In May, employment stood at 17.8 million, up 0.5% from May 2013. Full-time employment fell by 29,100 from April, while part-time employment increased by 54,900 from the previous month.
