Retail sales in February were $41.1 billion, a decrease of 0.1% from February but up 3.9% from March 2013.  Excluding sales by motor vehicle and parts dealers and by gasoline stations, retail sales were up by 2.6%  from March 2013. Retail sales in volume terms declined 0.2% from February.  Decreases in month-over-month sales were reported in 7 of 11 sectors representing 59% of retail trade.  March 2014 sales over March 2013 were up in all provinces.  Alberta led the way with an 11.1% sales gain, followed by Saskatchewan (+9.1%) and Manitoba (+4.1%).   Ontario recorded a 2.2% gain over March...

Wholesalers sold $50.5 billion worth of goods and services in March, down 0.4% from February but 2.9% higher than in March 2013.  Excluding the automotive sector, wholesale sales were up 2.1% from March 2013.     In terms of volume, wholesale sales were down 0.2% in March from February. Annualized wholesale sales grew in eight provinces.  Newfoundland and Labrador (+15.9%) led the way, followed by Manitoba (+12.8%) and Prince Edward Island (+10.8%).  Decreases occurred in Nova Scotia (-4.6%) and Saskatchewan (-1.3%).  Quebec’s wholesale sales were up 1.2% from March 2013.  ...

Municipalities issued $6.0 billion worth of building permits in March, down 3.0% from February  and 5.5% lower than in March 2013.       Three provinces reported an increase in permits over a year ago.  Double-digit increases were recorded in New Brunswick (+35.4%) and British Columbia (+16.5%).  Double-digit annualized decreases over March 2013 occurred in five provinces.  The largest year-over-year losses were recorded in Prince Edward Island (-51.5%), Saskatchewan (-29.5%) and Newfoundland and Labrador (-28.6%).  Quebec reported a 9.5% annualized increase while Ontario experienced a 1.6%...

Employment in April was down 0.2% from March. The unemployment rate was 6.9%, unchanged from March.  Construction employment was unchanged from March as was manufacturing employment. In April, employment stood at 17.8 million, up 0.8% from April 2013.  Full-time employment fell by 30,900 from March, while part-time employment increased by 2,000 from the previous month.  Full-time employment was up by 70,000 from April 2013, while part-time increased by 79,200 over the same period.
