Retail sales in November were $40.2 billion, a decrease of 1.8% from November and up 3.4% from December 2012. Excluding sales by motor vehicle and parts dealers and by gasoline stations, retail sales were up by 1.1% from December 2012. Retail sales in volume terms fell 2.2% from November. Decreases in month-over-month sales were reported in 9 of 11 sectors representing 79% of retail trade. Total retail sales for 2013 were $477.4 billion, up 2.5% over the same period last year. Wholesalers sold $49.6 billion worth of goods and services in December, down 1.4% from November and 2.1% higher than in December 2012. Excluding the automotive sector, wholesale sales were up 2.3% from December 2012. In terms of volume, wholesale sales were down 1.6% in December from November. Annualized wholesale sales grew in six provinces. Prince Edward Island (+10.8%) led the way, followed by Saskatchewan (+7.1%). The Consumer Price Index rose by 1.2% in December compared with December 2012, following a 0.9% increase in November. The CPI for goods increased by 1.1% in the 12 months to December while the CPI for services was up 1.5% over the same period. Gasoline prices increased 4.7% from December 2012, after gaining 0.4% in November. Overall, energy prices grew 4.6% between December 2012 and December 2013, following a 2.3% increase in November.
