Municipalities issued $6.6 billion worth of building permits in June, down 10.3% from May and 4.8% lower than in June 2012. Four provinces reported a growth in permits over a year ago led by New Brunswick (+25.0%), and Alberta (+24.3%). Double-digit annualized decreases over June 2012 occurred in five provinces. Prince Edward Island suffered the largest loss (-59.1%) followed by Nova Scotia (-35.5%) and Quebec (-20.4%). Ontario registered an annualized loss of 8.9%. Employment in July was down 0.2% from June. The unemployment rate was up from June at 7.2%. Construction employment fell by 0.5%from June while manufacturing employment increased 0.8% from a month earlier. In July employment stood at 17.7 million, up 1.3% from July 2012. Full-time employment fell by 18,300 from June, while part-time employment decreased by 21,200 from the previous month. Full-time employment was up by 153,900 from July 2012, while part-time increased by 72,000 over the same period. The Consumer Price Index rose by 1.2% in June compared with June 2012 following a 0.7% increase in May. Gasoline prices increased 4.6% from June 2012, after falling 1.5% in May. Gasoline prices increased in the 12 months to June in all provinces, with Manitoba and Alberta posting the largest gains. Overall, energy prices rose 4.1% between June 2012 and June 2013, following a 1.0% increase in May. Wholesalers sold $50.3 billion worth of goods and services in May, up 2.3% from April and 0.8% higher than in May 2012. Excluding the automotive sector, wholesale sales were up 1.1% from May 2012. In terms of volume, wholesale sales were up 2.4% in May from April. Annualized wholesale sales grew in seven provinces. Prince Edward Island (+11.1%) led the way, followed by Saskatchewan (+8.3%) and British Columbia (+3.7%).
