Employment in September increased by 12,100 from August. The unemployment rate was 7.1%, up from 7.0% in August. Municipalities issued $7.5 billion worth of building permits in August, down 3.7% from July but 15.1% higher than in August 2014. Five provinces reported an increase in permits over a year ago. Wholesalers sold $55.4 billion worth of goods and services in July, unchanged from June and 4.2% higher than in July 2014. Excluding the automotive sector, wholesale sales were up 3.7% from July 2014. In terms of volume, wholesale sales were down 0.4% in July from June. Annualized wholesale sales grew in nine provinces. The Consumer Price Index rose by 1.3% in August compared with August 2014, unchanged from July’s rate of annualized increase. The CPI in August for goods was up 0.7% from a year earlier while the CPI for services rose 1.8%. Gasoline prices decreased 12.6% from August 2014, after falling 12.2% in July.
