Employment in August increased by 12,000 from July. The unemployment rate was 7.0%, up from 6.8% in July. Construction employment was down 0.3% from July while manufacturing employment fell by 0.2% from a month earlier. In August, employment stood at 18.0 million, up 1.1% from August 2014. Full-time employment grew by 54,400 from July, while part-time employment fell by 42,400 from the previous month. Wholesalers sold $55.3 billion worth of goods and services in June, up 1.3% from May and 3.6% higher than in June 2014. Excluding the automotive sector, wholesale sales were up 2.3% from June 2014. In terms of volume, wholesale sales were up 1.1% in June from May. Annualized wholesale sales grew in seven provinces. Prince Edward Island (+8.3%) led the way, followed by Nova Scotia (+8.2%) and Ontario (+7.0%). Quebec’s wholesale sales were up 3.9% from June 2014. The Consumer Price Index rose by 1.3% in July compared with July 2014, after increasing 1.0% in June. The CPI in July for goods was up 0.7% from a year earlier while the CPI for services rose 1.9%. Retail sales in June were $43.2 billion, up 1.0% from May and an increase of 1.4% from June 2014. Excluding sales by motor vehicle and parts dealers and by gasoline stations, retail sales were up by 2.7% from June 2014. In the first six months of 2015, retail sales were up 2.2% compared with same period in 2014. Excluding gasoline stations (-16.1%), retail sales were up 5.0% in the first half of 2015. Municipalities issued $7.7 billion worth of building permits in June, up 14.8% from May but 3.8% lower than in June 2014. Five provinces reported an increase in permits over a year ago. New Brunswick recorded a 62.2% year-over-year gain while British Columbia posted a 35.2% increase. The largest annualized losses occurred in Quebec (-36.2%) and Newfoundland and Labrador (-34.3%).
