The Consumer Price Index rose by 1.0% in June compared with June 2014, after increasing 0.9% in May. The CPI in June for goods was up 0.2% from a year earlier while the CPI for services rose 1.9%. Gasoline prices decreased 14.1% from June 2014, after falling 17.4% in May.  Overall, energy prices fell 9.0% between June 2014 and June 2015, following an 11.8%  annualized rate of decrease in May  Excluding energy, the annualized Consumer Price Index rose 2.1% in June, down  from 2.2% in May. Wholesalers sold $54.5 billion worth of goods and services in May, down 1.0% from April but 2.9% higher than in May 2014.  Excluding the automotive sector, wholesale sales were up 3.1% from May 2014.    In terms of volume, wholesale sales were down 1.0% in May from April. Annualized wholesale sales grew in eight provinces.  Saskatchewan (+9.8%) led the way, followed by Prince Edward Island (+9.4%) and Ontario (+5.6%).  Quebec’s wholesale sales were up 0.7% from May 2014.   Alberta (-4.2%) and Nova Scotia (-0.9%) were the two provinces to experience losses. Employment in June decreased by 6,400 from May.  The unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.8%.  Construction employment  was up 0.6% from May while manufacturing employment fell by 0.4% from a month earlier. In June, employment stood at 18.0 million, up 1.0% from June 2014.  Full-time employment grew by 64,800 from May, while part-time employment fell by 71,200 from the previous month.  Full time employment was up by 233,700 from June 2014, while part-time  employment fell by 57,600 over the same period. Municipalities issued $6.7 billion worth of building permits in May, down 14.5% from April and 3.6% lower than in May 2014.     Two provinces reported an increase in permits over a year ago.  British Columbia recorded a 21.6% year-over-year gain while Ontario posted a 6.4% increase.  The largest annualized losses occurred in Manitoba (-53.2%) and Newfoundland and Labrador (-39.5%).   Quebec’s loss from May 2014 was 7.1% Builders took out residential building permits worth $3.9 billion in May, down 13.5% from April and 3.7% lower than in May 2014.   Four provinces reported an annualized...

Retail sales in March were $42.5 billion, up 0.7% from February and an increase of 3.1% from March 2014.  Excluding sales by motor vehicle and parts dealers and by gasoline stations, retail sales were up by 5.7% from March 2014.   Retail sales in volume terms were up 0.1% from February.  Increases in month-over-month sales were reported in 7 of 11 sectors representing 71% of retail trade.  March 2015 sales over March 2014 were  up in six provinces.  British Columbia led the way with a 7.9% sales gain, followed by Ontario (+5.9%) and New Brunswick (+2.8%).  The largest loss was recorded in...
