The Consumer Price Index rose by 2.1% in August compared with August 2013,  the same rate of annualized increase as in July.    The CPI in August for goods was up 1.7% from a year earlier while the CPI for services rose 2.4%. Wholesalers sold $52.9 billion worth of goods and services in July, down 0.3% from June but 6.1% higher than in July 2013.  Excluding the automotive sector, wholesale sales were up 4.9% from July 2013.    In terms of volume, wholesale sales were down 0.6% in July from June. Annualized wholesale sales grew in nine provinces.  Prince Edward Island (+16.5%) led the way, followed by Manitoba (+10.0%) and British Columbia (+8.5%).  Quebec’s wholesale sales were up 2.6% from July 2013 while Ontario’s annualized  increase was 7.2%.   The only year-over-year lose occurred in Newfoundland...

Employment in August was down 0.1% from July. The unemployment rate was 7.0%, unchanged from July.  Construction employment was up 1.9% from July while  manufacturing employment fell 0.6% from a month earlier. In August, employment stood at 17.9 million, up 0.5% from August 2013.  Full-time employment fell by 2,300 from July, while part-time employment decreased by 8,700 from the previous month.  Full-time employment was up by 15,300 from August 2013, while part-time increased by 66,000 over the same period. Retail sales in June were $42.6 billion, an increase of 1.1% from May and up 5.9% from June 2013.  Excluding sales by motor vehicle and parts dealers and by gasoline stations, retail sales were up by 5.6%  from June 2013.   In the first six months of 2014, retail sales were up 4.7% compared with the same period last year.
