Employment in June was down 0.1% from May. The unemployment rate was 7.1%, up from 7.0% in May. Construction employment was up 2.4% from May while manufacturing employment was down 0.6% from a month earlier. In June, employment stood at 17.8 million, up 0.4% from June 2013. Full-time employment grew by 33,500 from May, while part-time employment decreased by 43,000 from the previous month. Municipalities issued $6.9 billion worth of building permits in May, up 13.8% from April but 6.4% lower than in May 2013. Four provinces reported an increase in permits over a year ago. The largest increase was recorded in Manitoba (+45.1%) followed by British Columbia (+7.7%) and New Brunswick (+7.5%). Double-digit annualized decreases over May 2013 occurred in three provinces. Wholesalers sold $51.2 billion worth of goods and services in April, up 1.2% from March and 4.5% higher than in April 2013. Excluding the automotive sector, wholesale sales were up 5.4% from April 2013. In terms of volume, wholesale sales were up 1.2% in April from March. Retail sales in April were $41.6 billion, an increase of 1.1% from March and up 5.1% from April 2013. Excluding sales by motor vehicle and parts dealers and by gasoline stations, retail sales were up by 4.8% from April 2013. Retail sales in volume terms grew by 0.8% from March. The Consumer Price Index rose by 2.3% in May compared with May 2013, following a 2.0% increase in April. The CPI for goods increased by 2.5% in the 12 months to May while the CPI for services was up 2.1% over the same period. Gasoline prices increased 6.3% from May 2013, after rising 6.6% in April. Overall, energy prices grew 8.4% between May 2013 and May 2014, the same annualized rate of increase as experienced in April.
