Wholesalers sold $49.2 billion worth of goods and services in October, up 0.9% from September and 2.2% higher than in October 2011. Excluding the automotive sector, wholesale sales were up 1.0% from October 2011. In terms of volume, wholesale sales were up 0.8% in October from September. Annualized wholesale sales grew in seven provinces. Nova Scotia (+8.2%) led the way, followed by Newfoundland and Labrador (+7.0%) and Quebec (+6.0%). Employment in December increased by 40,000 positions from November. The unemployment rate decreased from 7.2% in November to 7.1% in December, the lowest in four years. Construction employment was up 1.4% from November, while manufacturing employment increased 0.5% from a month earlier. In December, employment stood at 17.7 million, up 1.8% from December 2011. Full-time employment rose by 41,200 from November, while part-time employment decreased by 1,400 from the previous month.
