Employment in September increased by 12,100 from August. The unemployment rate was 7.1%, up from 7.0% in August. Construction employment was up 0.5% from August and manufacturing employment was unchanged from a month earlier.
In September, employment stood at 18.0 million, up 0.9% from September 2014. Full-time employment fell by 61,900 from August, while part-time employment grew by 74,000 from the previous month. Full time employment was up by 201,500 from September 2014, while part-time employment fell by 40,300 over the same period.
Employment over the past year grew in seven provinces. British Columbia, with a 2.1% annualized growth rate, led the way followed by Manitoba (+1.6%). The employment growth rate in Quebec was 1.2 % and in Ontario was 0.4%.. Employment from a year earlier was down most in Newfoundland and Labrador (-0.8%) followed by New Brunswick (-0.7%).
Total employment gains of 27,100 have occurred on Ontario since September 2014. Its unemployment rate in September was 6.9%, up from 6.8% in August. Quebec’s total employment increase since September 2014 was 46,700. Its unemployment rate in September was 7.7%, down from 8.0% in August.
Since September 2014, employment in the goods-producing sector was down by 0.7% and in the services-producing sector grew by 1.3%.
The construction industry gained 6,800 jobs in September over August, bringing total construction employment to 1,366,400 which is a decrease of 10,800 from September 2014. Total manufacturing employment was up 600 from August to 1,705,800 jobs. This was an increase of 2,700 positions (0.2%) from September 2014.
The number of people working in retail and wholesale trade was down 8,900 in September from August and totaled 2,730,400, unchanged from September 2014.
Employment among adult women, aged 25 and over, was up 75,200 in September 2015 over September 2014 and increased by 4,200 from August. Their unemployment rate was 5.5%. Employment among adult men was up 115,300 in September 2015 over September 2014 and grew by 6,200 from August. Their unemployment rate was 6.4%. Employment among youths (15-24 years of age) was down 29,400 since September 2014 but increased by 1,600 from August. Their unemployment rate was 13.5%.
In September, private sector employment was up 10,100 from August and increased by 71,000 from September 2014. Self-employment grew by 30,800 in September over August but increased by 68,400 from September 2014. Public sector employment was down 28,800 from August but grew by 21,700 from September 2014. Total private sector employment in September was 11,599,300; self-employment was 2,777,400.
